Egypt seeks closer ties with ASEAN through application for Sectoral Dialogue Partnership

On 17 September 2026, H.E. Yasser Elshemy, Ambassador of Egypt to ASEAN, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Ms. Prinat Apirat, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Thailand to ASEAN, at the Permanent Mission of Thailand to ASEAN in Jakarta.

Ambassador Elshemy reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to elevating its relations with ASEAN through its formal application to become a Sectoral Dialogue Partner of ASEAN. He underscored Egypt’s commitment to expanding cooperation with ASEAN across a range of areas, including connectivity, cultural exchanges, capacity-building for public officials, security, and peacekeeping, noting also that Egypt has been a High Contracting Party to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) since 6 September 2016.

On this occasion, Ambassador Prinat welcomed Egypt’s application for Sectoral Dialogue Partnership and encouraged Egypt to explore opportunities and practical avenues for cooperation with ASEAN in many areas, including trade and investment, people-to-people connectivity, particularly among youth and media professionals, tourism, energy, sustainable development, food security, and maritime security.
