On 27 September 2024, H.E. Mrs. Cristina González, Ambassador of Uruguay to ASEAN, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Mrs. Phantipha Iamsudha Ekarohit, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Thailand to ASEAN, at the Permanent Mission of Thailand to ASEAN in Jakarta. Both sides discussed potential areas of cooperation between ASEAN and Uruguay, including trade and investment, sustainable development, people-to-people ties, tourism, agriculture, and renewable energy, as well as cooperation through ASEAN-MERCOSUR, of which Uruguay serves as President Pro-Tempore this year.

Uruguay engages with ASEAN through the ASEAN-MERCOSUR framework. The first ASEAN-MERCOSUR Ministerial Meeting was convened in 2008 in Brasilia.
